University of Alabama at Birmingham will offer a new graduate degree in a growing technological trend.
UAB is now offering a Master of Science degree in artificial intelligence in medicine. The program is designed to give students an opportunity and skill required to succeed in the emerging crossroads of medicine and artificial intelligence.
“This is a unique degree program in the Birmingham medical community that will enable engineers, computer scientists and future clinical practitioners to adopt an integrated approach to improving human health that leverages artificial intelligence,” said Anupam Agarwal, senior vice president of medicine and dean of the Heersink School of Medicine.
The degree will arm students with the technical skills required for managing medical datasets for AI development, according to a release.
Established by the Marnix Heersink Institute for Biomedical Innovation and the Heersink School of Medicine, the program focuses on AI-driven application regarding medical imaging, signal processing and the creation of language models for clinical decision making.
“We are meeting the growing demand for professional education and technical expertise at the graduate level for training in artificial intelligence in medicine,” Agarwal said. “Our goal is to provide graduate-level professionals with AI application skill sets from various background to adopt an integrated approach to improving human health and patient outcomes.”
The degree carries four main areas, foundations, applications, integration and design of AI application through dissertation research.
“As part of graduate dissertation research, students will engage in cutting-edge research at UAB, collaborate with faculty experts and utilize state-of-the-art AI labs across UAB to gain a comprehensive understanding of AI’s practical applications in medicine,” said Sandeep Bodduluri, director of AI programs at Marnix E. Heersink Institute for Biomedical Innovation.
The Engineering, Business, College of Arts and Science and Health Profession schools contributed to create the integrated curriculum. The program is to address the growing demand medical AI technologies and to provide opportunities for experience in clinical settings.
“Our mission is to produce graduates who are prepared for the workforce with graduate-level expertise in AI with specialized knowledge in medical applications,” Bodduluri said.
